Understanding the New DOT Fentanyl Drug Testing Rule
The Addition of Fentanyl to the Department of Transportation’s Drug-Testing Panel marks a significant update to federal safety standards. Officials added fentanyl and its primary metabolite, norfentanyl, to both urine and oral fluid testing panels. The DOT made this change to directly address the rising safety risks associated with synthetic opioids across the transportation industry.
How Testing Sites and MROs Are Adapting
Collection facilities across the country are already implementing these new testing standards. For example, third-party collection networks like Prime Testing Sites are actively processing these updated DOT panels.
When a driver tests positive for fentanyl, a Medical Review Officer (MRO) will immediately step in. The MRO will determine if the driver has a valid medical prescription for the substance. If they have a legitimate prescription, the MRO may verify the result as negative. However, without a valid prescription, the test is confirmed as a violation.
What a Positive Result Means for Your Career
A confirmed positive test requires immediate action. You must stop performing all safety-sensitive duties right away. The Medical Review Officer (MRO) will then report the violation to the FMCSA Clearinghouse. To get back behind the wheel, you must complete the federal Return-to-Duty (RTD) process.
